Can I use frozen cherries instead of fresh for Black Forest cake?

I'm planning to make a Black Forest cake this weekend but fresh cherries are crazy expensive right now. Has anyone tried using frozen cherries instead, and do I need to thaw them first or change anything else in the recipe?
